NIBRS – National Incident Based Reporting System

The National Incident Based Reporting System is a federal system run by the FBI.  It provides a method for reporting common criminal statistics.  For example, certain codes link to certain offenses like Murder, Larceny, etc.  When municipalities report to the FBI their crime statistics, they will give them the code and the number of times that criminal category was used.  It is VERY common for each state to have their own implementation of this.  It is also sometimes just referred to as IBR (Incident Based Reporting) or IBRS (Incident Based Reporting System)
